Overview
This project is a community-focused app + space design that bridges the generational gap between seniors and youth through gardening. By engaging participants in shared planting activities, it fosters intergenerational connections and mutual support, enriching the lives of both age groups.
This initiative not only revitalizes underutilized urban spaces but also cultivates a sustainable, inclusive, and collaborative community.
CONTEXT
Why important?
As urbanization continues to accelerate, modern cities face increasing challenges of social isolation and community fragmentation. Youth struggle with mental health issues due to a lack of supportive environments, while the elderly experience loneliness and limited opportunities for meaningful engagement. This project aims to design a smart space and app that fosters intergenerational connections, encouraging shared experiences and mutual support between the elderly and youth in urban areas.

PROBLEM
Uneven urbanization has disrupted community structures, leading to social isolation and limited interaction between generations. This has caused:
01
Elderly facing loneliness, health decline, and lack of purpose
02
Youth experiencing stress, social anxiety, and mental health struggles
03
A general lack of spaces that encourage intergenerational learning and communication
RESEARCH
Insights from Interviews:
"We need to transform how we design, fostering empathy and connection."

Personas & Their Impact

Needs a space where she can engage, share experiences, and feel valued.
Needs an environment where she feels safe, understood, and connected.
What I Learned
01

02
Incorporating nature-based design elements can create a calmer,
safer environment for meaningful interactions.

03
Designing safe and engaging public spaces can reduce safety concerns while
encouraging positive interactions between generations.

DESIGN PROCESS
Building Connections Step by Step:
Creating a user journey help me to picture and organized the interactions of using app and activities in the space.
App Design
By analyzing a user service blueprint, I am able to detail every interaction a user has with the space. This blueprint goes deeper and examines all supporting physical and digital interactions.

Final Design
Finally, I modeled an interactive public space for users to be reconnected physically, while using the app to keep collaborating with each other through plant gardening.
